Gamma Amino Butyric Acid, more commonly known as GABA, is a natural amino acid that is found in our body. This amino acid is responsible for calming our neurons when they are in an excited state due to stress or anxiety. This brings about a state of calm and relief in the whole body and mind.
Some people, who have a deficiency of GABA, take an external supplement for the same effect. This additional supplement is more commonly used by people who have ADHD, depression, sleep disorders, nervousness or are trying to get rid of their alcoholism. GABA helps these people to enjoy peaceful sleep and also to feel more relaxed.
How Does GABA Work On Our Brain?
When other neurotransmitters of the brain start firing in rapid succession, GABA inhibits the overall excitement in the brain. When your mind is continuously in an excited state, you would be less likely to focus and concentrate on the task in hand. You would feel agitated, irritated and anxious and would have difficulty in sleeping.
GABA is the second most predominant neurotransmitter in our brain. Unlike other neurotransmitters that are both facilitators and inhibitors, GABA is only an inhibitor and plays an important role in creating a chemical balancing in the brain, which in turn offers peaceful mind.
Studies have still not been able to prove how the GABA supplement is able to soothe the nerves since it cannot cross over the brain-blood barrier. GABA supplement has still not been approved by FDA so there are no dosage guidelines recommended by them.
Those who use GABA regularly, suggest a dosage of 250-750mg daily spread over 2-3 times throughout the day. It is also highly advisable to take no more than 5 grams a day of GABA otherwise it can have dangerous side effects.
Some of the common side effects of GABA that you may experience are:
· Increase in heart rate
· Rapid breathing with shortness of breath
· Tingling and tickling sensation in different parts of the body
Most of the side effects dissipate after some time. Only the tingling and tickling sensation may remain in the body even after 30-40 minutes of taking the dosage.
It is also advised not to take GABA supplement for more than 3 weeks at a time as it may actually heighten the feeling of anxiety, when taken over a long period of time. It is best to take it in an on-off cycle of 1-2 weeks.
